Leaders of FAO, IFAD and WFP wrap up four-day visit to see drought-response

Addis Ababa, 5 September 2017 - Speaking at the conclusion of a four-day visit to Ethiopia, including to the drought-stricken Somali region, the heads of the United Nations food agencies made a joint call for greater investment in long-term activities that strengthen people's resilience to drought and the impacts of climate shocks.

Graziano da Silva meets Tanzania’s President John Magufuli

6 September 2017, Dar Es Salaam – José Graziano da Silva today met Tanzania’s President John Magufuli to commend the country for prioritizing food and nutrition security and to mark 40 years of FAO presence in Tanzania. 

The country's Vice President Samia Suluhu participated at an event commemorating the long-lasting cooperation. 

The pair discussed challenges and opportunities in Tanzania particularly in developing the livestock and aquaculture sectors, and addressing youth employment.

Graziano da Silva highlights potential for spice production and processing

7 September 2017, Zanzibar – FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva today thanked Zanzibar’s President Ali Mohamed Shein for the warm welcome during his visit to the island.

After touring a spices garden and market, Graziano da Silva praised the quality and variety of spices produced in Zanzibar and highlighted the potential for adding value such as producing for the international natural medicine sector.

Graziano da Silva and Yoweri Museveni hold talks in Entebbe, discuss refugee response

31 August 2017, Entebbe – José Graziano da Silva today met Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni for bilateral talks on joint cooperation including the response to the growing number of refugees fleeing war in South Sudan. 

Uganda is host to the fastest-growing refugee crisis in the world. Since July last year, more than one million South Sudanese refugees have crossed into Uganda.

FAO Director-General visits refugee settlements in Uganda’s north

30 August 2017, Kampala -The FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva called for greater funding for a sustainable response to the refugee crisis in Uganda, after concluding a visit today to refugee settlements in the country's north.

The Director-General also reaffirmed FAO's support to the Government of Uganda in its compassionate asylum policy under which land is allocated to refugees for shelter and cultivation.
