Death of Nelson Mandela

FAO joins the world in mourning the death of a giant: Nelson Mandela.

I express our condolences to his family and to the people of South Africa.

Madiba, as he was known with respect and affection, left us yesterday.

This is a moment of profound sadness, but also of hope. Hope that the words and action of Nelson Mandela, who dedicated his life to elevating the condition and dignity of the oppressed, the marginalised and the voiceless, will always inspire all of us.

Madiba was born in Eastern Cape. But he belongs to the world. And now, to the ages.
