22nd session of the Committee on Forestry
Agreement signed between FAO and the Korea Forest Service
Your Excellency Mr. Won Sop Shin, Minister of the Korea Forest Service,
Distinguished Members of the delegation of the Republic of Korea,
Distinguished guests, Ladies and gentlemen, ,
I will be brief, but cannot resist saying that we are here not only to celebrate an important and special occasion.
We are also here to write a new successful chapter of the mutual collaboration between FAO and the Republic of Korea.
As you all know, the Republic of Korea is a major partner of FAO, as it numbers among the fifteen largest contributors to the Regular Programme of our Organization.
That only shows how committed the country is to helping us tackle our main challenges.
Today, in an occasion that also inaugurates the 4th Forest Week, FAO and the Korea Forest Service are signing a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly promote national forest restoration and sustainable management.
According to this agreement, FAO will support the Forest Landscape Restoration Mechanism, which is designed to assist the implementation, monitoring and reporting of forest landscape restoration at the country level.
I am convinced that this instrument will contribute to achieve the targets that FAO pursues in its Strategic Framework, in particular those related to the roles played by forest restoration for rural livelihoods, poverty alleviation and food security.
Thank you for your attention.
