Worldwide Offices

FAO is implementing the most significant reorganization since its founding. The fundamental objective is to bring FAO as close as possible to its Members. The reorganization entails a strengthened decentralized structure; a management system with increased delegation of authority; and an environment that encourages creativity and initiative.

The reorganization also strengthens FAO as a centre of excellence and world reference centre with a clear delineation of responsibility for global, regional and country-specific activities.

In addition to its headquarters in Rome, Italy, FAO has an extensive network of decentralized offices.

Regional Offices

The principal function of the Regional Offices is the overall identification, planning and implementation of FAO's priority activities in the region. They ensure a multidisciplinary approach to programmes; identify priority areas of action for the Organization in the region and, in collaboration with departments and divisions at headquarters, advise on the incorporation of such priorities into the Organization's Programme of Work and Budget. The Regional Offices also implement approved programmes in the region, monitor the level of programme implementation,and draw attention to any problems and deficiencies.

Specific activities of the Regional Offices include:

Ensuring a multidisciplinary approach to projects and programmes implemented in the region with FAO's technical assistance.
Reporting on the major developments and trends in countries of the region, based on regional and Subregional objectives concerning food and agriculture.
Organizing the FAO Regional Conference, every two years.
Maintaining policy and technical dialogue with and among FAO member countries, also involving national and international institutions.
Following up on the World Food Summit and issues related to food security in the region.
Promoting technical cooperation among countries of the region.

Subregional Offices

The Subregional Offices work closely with the respective Regional Office. They are primarily responsible for the overall planning of FAO activities in the Subregion. With the guidance and support of the Regional Office, they ensure a multidisciplinary approach to programmes, identify priority areas of action, implement approved programmes, and monitor the level of programme implementation in the subregion, drawing attention to any problems and deficiencies.

Specific activities of the Sub-regional Offices include:

Reporting on the major developments and trends in countries of the Sub-region, based on their objectives for food and agriculture.
Ensuring policy and technical dialogue with and among FAO member countries, also involving national and international institutions.
Following up on the World Food Summit and issues related to food security in the subregion.
Promoting technical cooperation among the countries

Country Offices

FAO is currently present through the Representations in the countries listed on this page. The main aim of these offices is to assist governments in developing policies, programmes and projects to address the root causes of hunger and malnutrition; help them develop their agricultural, fisheries and forestry sectors, and also use their environmental and natural resources in a sustainable way.

Specific activities of the Country Offices include:

Implementing FAO's field projects and participating in the development of the Field Programme by identifying and formulating new projects and liaising with local donor representations.
Helping governments to prevent and assess the damage of disasters and assisting them in reconstruction and rehabilitation of the agricultural sector.
Carrying out public awareness activities and support some important FAO campaigns such as TeleFood and the World Food Day.
Providing assistance to technical and investment missions from FAO headquarters and from Regional or Subregional Offices to the country.
Serving as a channel for FAO's services to governments and other partners (donors, NGOs, CSOs, research institutions, etc.).
Keeping FAO informed of major social and economic developments in the country and monitoring the situation of the agriculture sector in the country.
Acting as FAO Representative to host governments and all partners involved in FAO activities

Liaison Offices

The Liaison Offices have been established at locations where many UN system organizations and other international, intergovernmental or non-governmental associations or organizations are working. They maintain relations with Members and external development partners operating in these locations. They monitor developments affecting food, nutrition, and agriculture and represent the Organization at meetings relevant to FAO’s mandate.

Partnership and Liaison Offices

Responding to the request of a number of member countries for the establishment of an FAO office or strengthening of an already existing FAO Representation in their country, FAO has developed a new concept: the Partnership and Liaison Office. This novel type of office is well suited to Members’ needs, as it provides for stronger country participation in FAO’s work and programmes at national, subregional, regional and interregional levels as well as enhanced cooperation through unilateral trust fund projects and South-South Cooperation.
