FAO Regional Office for Africa

Launch of the OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook 2014-2023

The OECD and FAO will present the key findings of their annual report on Friday, 11 July 2014. The publication coincides with a downward movement in global agricultural prices, reflecting optimistic supply prospects of certain commodities such as cereals and vegetable oils. The trend is expected to continue further in the coming years as a result of the production response to recent high prices.

The OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook 2014-2023 includes price projections for cereals, oilseeds, sugar, cotton, meat and dairy products as well as biofuels. It considers changes in the availability of, and demand for, such commodities as a source of food, feed or fuel over the next decade.

The report looks at how globalization and shifting income levels and urbanization trends, especially in many developing countries, are impacting on the type of food people eat and what this means for farmers and other producers. It also examines the important role policy reforms including in the United States and the European Union are likely to have in the agricultural and fisheries markets

This edition of the Outlook has a special focus on India, the world’s second most populous country with the largest numbers of farmers and also the largest number of food-insecure people. Topics covered include India’s new National Food Security Act, the largest right-to-food programme of its kind ever attempted.

OECD Secretary-General, Angel Gurría, and FAO Director-General, José Graziano da Silva, will give a press conference to launch the OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook 2014-2023 at FAO headquarters in Rome on Friday 11 July at 11.30am.
