International Workshop for Public and Private Sector Agriculture Extension Services Providers, 22 - 26 November 2010
Agriculture extension in most parts of Africa has gone through a lot of evolution since the colonial times. The different changes have been linked to the political and economic situation of the time. Within the current neoliberal framework when governments are expected not to engage in business but to create a congenial environment for private sector to operate in, agriculture extension has also become a new sector to be opened up for private sector participation.
The challenge however, is the understanding of the full roles and responsibilities of both the private sector extension service providers and the government extension service departments for this new direction. Moreover, being a heavily technically loaded area, the requisite capacity among the private extension services providers is inadequate and needs to be built over time since very few personnel exits in the private sector.
This workshop therefore is to enhance the capacity for staff of government extension departments, private agriculture extension service providers and other stakeholders in Africa.
The purpose of the workshop is to improve on the knowledge base and skills of the private sector operators in agriculture extension services so that they may take the opportunity of the new emerging space in the agriculture extension services sector. The participants will be empowered to do business with the established extension services departments more effectively. The workshop will also enable private extension deliverers to participate more efficiently, professionally and technically in this technical area of privatization.
