Sustainable Development Goals and Agrarian Transformations in the Global South: Trends and Opportunities

Policy Dialogue Workshop

Background

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nation (FAO) in partnership with the Sam Moyo African Institute for Agrarian Studies (SMAIAS) will organize a Policy Dialogue Workshop on “Sustainable Development Goals and Agrarian Transformations in the Global South: Trends and Opportunities” on 23-27 October 2017 in Harare, Zimbabwe.

FAO plays a key role in supporting Member States in attaining the SDGs and the key objectives related to food and agriculture are comprehensively integrated among the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and their targets. FAO serves as a custodian for a number of these targets and through its experience and expertise, providing technical support, identifying viable indicators, appropriate linkages and means of implementation. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can only be achieved through cooperation and global partnerships between multiple actors and across a broad range of areas. Therefore, FAO is continuously working in partnership with various actors at the global, regional and national level to carry out focused and integrated activities which effectively align with the priority issues of the Strategic Framework and support the achievement of sustainable rural development, food and nutrition security.

The main objective of the Policy Dialogue is to exchange knowledge and experiences on agrarian issues, sustainable investment in agriculture and food systems, sustainable and inclusive value chains; and climate change and migration within the context of the SDGs. In addition, it also aims to discuss agrarian transformations, historical trajectories and related policy interventions through the contributions of the Agrarian South Network (ASN) and SMAIAS.

The workshop is expected to be attended by 30 participants of which, the majority of the participants will be civil society representatives, Master’s and Ph.D. students drawn from across Africa, Asia, and Latin America/Caribbean. It will build upon the ongoing partnership between FAO and SMAIAS which was formalized through a Memoranda of Understanding in September 2016.
