Pan African Parliamentary Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition Training

Midrand, South Africa. Despite important progress in some sub-regions and countries, the overall situation of food security and nutrition (FSN) in Africa continues to lag behind global trends. Approximately one out of four persons in Sub-Saharan Africa and one out of five on the continent are estimated to be undernourished in 2015. Meanwhile, the region is affected by the multiple burden of malnutrition with under-nutrition co-existing with overweight or obesity, and rising levels of diet related non-communicable diseases and micronutrient deficiencies. This is compounded by population growth, urbanization, and the commercialization of the food systems which have brought along changes in life styles and consumption patterns.

This multistakeholder and multisectoral training aims to strengthen and consolidate the capacities of Parliamentarians to position food and nutrition security and the right to adequate food at the forefront of political and legislative agendas at regional level. The training will see to the strengthening of PAPA-FSN members’ capacities to proactively contribute to PAPA-FSN’s main objectives.
