A High-Level Dialogue Forum on Maintaining Peace Through Improved Food Security and Nutrition in Africa

Background

The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, the African Union Commission, and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) are jointly organizing a High-level Side Event on Maintaining Peace through Improved Food Security and Nutrition in Africa on the margins of the Thirty-third African Union Summit. The side event is in line with the summit’s theme 'silencing the guns: creating conducive conditions for Africa's development’.

The purpose of the side event is to discuss on the paramount significance of food security and nutrition in maintaining peace and security in Africa. Highlighting on the detrimental role that conflict plays in driving the worsening trends in food insecurity and malnutrition, the forum will decide on concreate actions to foster food security and nutrition, as critical drivers for peace and security. The side event will also officially launch and discuss on the key findings of the Publication, titled “Overview of Food Security and Nutrition in Africa 2019,” jointly published by FAO, AUC and UNECA. The Event

What: African Union Commission’s Plenary Hall - Old Conference Centre, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Who:  Ethiopian President H.E. Sahle-Work Zewde, Heads of State and Government, Ministers in charge of agriculture, High-Level Personalities from the Africa Union Commission, African Development Bank, FAO, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), United Nations Liaison Team (UNLT), and Representatives of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), the Private Sector and the media.

PRESS CONFERENCE:

Prominent personalities will speak to the media on the issues and linkages between conflict, hunger and malnutrition in Africa. The media are therefore cordially invited to attend the press conference, as well as cover the event. Group and exclusive interviews with leaders, officials and experts can be arranged.
