1st September 2015, Addis Ababa -In response to direct demand from the region and within the evolving framework of a Global Assistance Programme to support the promotion and application of the Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries, FAO will hold an East Africa Consultation Workshop on improving small-scale fisheries in the context of food security and poverty eradication. This event is organized by the FAO Subregional Office for Eastern Africa (SFE) in Collaboration with the FIPS.

The overall objective of the workshop is to facilitate the understanding of the principles of the SSF Guidelines and their application in order to support sustainable small-scale fisheries in the region. The SSF Guidelines is an international instrument specifically dedicated to small-scale fisheries and provides a comprehensive framework for States and other stakeholders to support the small-scale fisheries sector in realizing its true contribution to global and national efforts towards food security and poverty eradication.

The FAO Subregional Office for Eastern Africa (SFE) pointed out that there is a responsibility of all actors to ensure that there is practical implementation of the principles of the SSF Guidelines at community and household levels. The East Africa Consultation Workshop will convene governments, civil society representatives, researchers, regional organization representatives and NGOs from the countries covered by the FAO Sub-regional office in Ethiopia and from Tanzania.

The Consultation Workshop will be held over period of three days; structured around plenary presentations, discussions and working group sessions. Presentations and discussions are expected to take stock of the current status of small-scale fisheries in the East African region, provide input and advice on priorities for securing sustainable small-scale fisheries in the East African region and develop elements of an East Africa Regional Plan of Action for improved small-scale fisheries and identify potential resources and modalities for its implementation.
