Boosting Africa’s Soils

FAO has focused and integrated its work in the Region through Regional Initiatives. These Initiatives serve as a mechanism to ensure effective delivery and demonstrate impact of FAO’s work on the key priorities of the Region, while responding to FAO’s Strategic Objectives.

In Africa, three Regional Initiatives were developed based on an in-depth cross-sectoral and interdisciplinary review of regional issues and trends as well as alignment with regional commitments, such as the African Union commitments to ending hunger by 2025; pursuing inclusive agricultural transformation agenda to reduce poverty; and enhancing resilience of livelihoods and production systems, among others, which are inscribed in  the “|Malabo Declaration on Accelerated Agricultural Growth and Transformation for Shared Prosperity and Improved Livelihoods” adopted in 2014.

The Regional Initiatives call for accelerated action by countries to:

  1. fight against hunger (Africa’s Commitment to End Hunger by 2025);
  2. promote sustainable, inclusive proven innovative practices and principles of production and post-production processes (Sustainable Production Intensification and Value Chain Development in Africa); and
  3. strengthen resilience among vulnerable farming and pastoral communities (Building Resilience in Africa’s Drylands)
