RAF Management Meeting

Regional Office for Africa of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), is organizing a four-day Regional Management Meeting at La Palm Beach Hotel, Accra, Ghana from 16 to 19 February 2009. The overall objective of the meeting is to agree on basic principles upon which a Strategic Framework and a Medium Term Priority Plan for FAO interventions in the Africa Region would be formulated. The meeting is the first organized by the Regional Office in the framework of the FAO Reform process currently underway. The present meeting is also being convened after FAO Member States have recently adopted an Immediate Plan of Action (IPA) during a Special Session of Conference, the highest governing body of the Organization, in line with the Independent External Evaluation (IEE) recommendations. The meeting would therefore provide participants with an opportunity to translate the FAO global strategic objectives as set out in the IPA into regional strategic objectives for the Africa Region. The definition of the regional strategic objectives is based on the priorities as determined by African countries themselves through their regional institutions notably by the African Union (AU). In this context the Comprehensive African Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP), prepared as part of the implementation of NEPAD, as well as other related AU Summits decisions on agriculture and food security would provide the basis for the formulation of FAO action at the continental level. The Regional Management comprises, in addition to the Regional Representative, the four FAO Subregional Coordinators for Central, Eastern, Southern and West Africa. The opening of the meeting is scheduled for Monday 16 February 2009. Opening remarks will be delivered respectively by Mr. Edouard K. Tapsoba, Assistant Director-General/ Regional Representative a.i. for Africa and Dr. Abebe Haile Gabriel, Head of Rural Economy Division of the Africa Union Commission. Mr. Jim Butler, FAO Deputy Director-General will address the meeting by video conference from FAO Headquarters in Rome. The meeting will bring together about 40 participants including Representatives of selected FAO Headquarters Departments; Technical officers from the FAO Regional Office for Africa and the Sub-Regional Office for West Africa; invited guests from the African Union Commission (AUC); African Development Bank (AfDB); United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA); The World Bank (WB); the Forum for Agriculture in Africa ( FARA); the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa ( AGRA), etc.. The meeting will end on 19 February 2009 Thank you.
