FAO to launch The State of Food and Agriculture 2010‐11 Report during 22nd African Commission for Agricultural Statistics meeting in Addis Ababa

The 2010‐11 edition of the Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) of the United Nation’s annual flagship report the State of Food and Agriculture (SOFA) is titled “Women in Agriculture – Closing the gender gap for development. This publication makes a strong “business case” for addressing gender issues in agriculture and rural employment. It further demonstrates that men and women’s involvement in agriculture varies widely by country and context, but stresses one strikingly consistent finding – that women in all
regions of the world face gender‐related constraints that reduce their productivity and impose real costs on society. SOFA 2010–11 provides comprehensive data and analysis, documenting and assessing the costs of this gender gap and reveals that if women had the same access to productive resources as men, between 100 and 150 million people would be lifted out of hunger and poverty at global level.
