Three groups of 4 crossbred calves 9 months old were given diets based on maize, wheat bran, groundnut cake, wheat straw and green maize/green jowar (Sorghum vulgare) to provide digestible crude protein (CP) at the recommended amount or at 75% of that amount with untreated groundnut cake or at 75% recommended CP and with heat-treated groundnut cake. Daily DM intake for the 3 groups was 3.70, 3.43 and 4.04 kg and digestibility was 51.9, 53.4 and 58.6 for DM, 62.8, 59.7 and 56.9 for crude protein, 47.8, 49.5 and 52.3 for crude fibre, 74.5, 68.1 and 73.7 for nitrogen-free extract and 63.7, 60.1 and 70.1% for ether extract. There was no significant difference in concentrations of urea nitrogen, non-protein nitrogen, total protein and haemoglobin among calves given the 3 diets.
