Addition of 300 g groundnut oil to the concentrate mixture of 3 fistulated buffalo calves increased bacterial production in the rumen non-significantly when compared with 6 calves not given oil. A similar result was obtained for calves given 40% of digestible crude protein as urea and oil 150 or 400 g added to concentrate. Bacterial production was less with urea in the diet. Oil in the diet had a sparing action on production of volatile fatty acids and thus affected bacterial protein synthesis slightly.
