Two groups of 3 growing cattle were given groundnut cake to provide the required amount of protein. The cake was untreated or treated with formaldehyde 2.5% with minerals, vitamins, 1 kg sugar cane molasses and wheat bhoosa given freely. After 6 weeks on those diets, on 2 consecutive days, rumen fluid was sampled immediately before and 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8 h after a meal and blood immediately before a meal and at intervals of 2 h up to 8 h after the meal. On average, the group given treated groundnut cake had in ruman fluid less total nitrogen, non-protein N, ammonia N, total volatile fatty acids, acetic and valeric acids and a lower pH than the groups given untreated cake and there was no significant difference between groups in TCA-precipitable N or in propionic or butyric acids. The groups given treated cake had in serum more total N [from table; summary states less total N] and less ammonia N than the group given untreated cake.
