Daily milk production potential from improved tropical pastures can reach 10-12 l/cow and >10 000 l/ha if the correct spp., fertilizer regimes and management practices are used. Supplementary feeding is not usually necessary except when the fodder is mature or in the dry season, but mineral supplements are required. Data are given on forage and milk production from grasses and legumes including Pangola grass, Napier grass, Para grass and Neonotonia wightii. Annual milk production increased from 1000-2500 kg/ha on unimproved pasture to 15 000-22 000 kg/ha on irrigated pasture given NPK + S. This abstract relates to the following species:
