Feeding rubberbush (Calotropis procera) to cattle and sheep.

This shrub, native to tropical Asia and Africa, thrives in northern Australia. No toxic symptoms or gross or histological lesions were seen in two sheep fed fresh leaves and flowers at 5 g/kg body weight daily for 30 days followed by 10 g/kg for a further 30 days or in three groups of cattle fed 2.5, 5 or 10 g/kg for 84 days. There have been no reports of toxicity in cattle and goats browsing this shrub in northern Australia. However, toxic signs and death were reported in sheep fed leaves at 5 or 10 g/kg daily in the Sudan [see VB 49, 5544].
