 | Abstract 568 The effect of replacing skim milk powder by sunflower meal on the performance of weaner pigs.Ochetim,-S; Attia,-A Dep. Animal Production, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Univ. From about 10.5 to 23 kg weaned pigs were given a diet based on wheat with skimmed milk powder (SMP) 13 and sunflower oilmeal (SFM) 5% (control) or the same but with 50% or all the SMP replaced by SFM. Growth rate, feed intake and feed efficiency were not affected by replacement of 50% of SMP but when all SMP was replaced by SFM growth rate and feed efficiency were reduced significantly. Digestibility of DM, protein and fat did not differ between the control diet and that in which 50% SMP was replaced. Digestibility of energy was greater for the diet with 50% SMP replaced than for the other diets. Intake of digestible protein was greater for the control diet and that with 50% SMP replaced than for that with all SMP replaced. Intake of digestible energy decreased significantly when SMP was partly or wholly replaced. Pigs on the control diet or that with 50% SMP replaced required less digestible protein and energy per kg gain than did those given the diet with all the SMP replaced.
