After sowing mixed pastures on Alfic Haplaquod sand in 1981, daily liveweight gains of cattle in 1982 were 0.58, 0.48, 0.43, 0.43 and 0.51 kg/h on pastures of Bahia grass/Aeschynomene americana, Bahia grass + 224 kg N/ha, Bahia grass + 56 kg N/ha, Bahia grass/Desmodium heterocarpon (although the latter failed to established) and Bahia grass/D. heterocarpon (did not establish)/Macroptilium lathyroides, resp. Carrying capacity was greatest for high N + Bahia grass pastures at 778 animal days/ha and least for Bahia grass/D. heterocarpon pastures at 364 animal days.

This abstract relates to the following species:

Aeschynomene americanum, Desmodium heterocarpon, Macroptilium lathyroides, Paspalum notatum
