Effect of graded replacement of fish meal with vegetable proteins in broiler starter rations.

Broiler chickens were in 5 groups and fed on a diet containing (%) maize 55, 55, 55, 55 or 55; rice polishings 5 in common; groundnut cake 26, 0, 0, 0 or 0; soyabean cake 0, 17, 20, 26 or 30; sesamum cake 0, 12, 12, 8.5 or 7; fish meal 12, 9, 6, 3 or 0; dicalcium phosphate 1, 1, 1 or 1.2; and mineral and vitamin premix 1 in common. The diets were of equal protein value. Body weight gain from 1 day old to 6 weeks old was in that order, 1222, 1338, 1257, 1247 and 365 g and the chickens took 2.47, 2.25, 2.53, 2.49 and 5.65 kg feed per kg gain. The results showed that fish meal can be successfully replaced with soyabean meal and sesamum cake up to 75% level without supplementary lysine and methionine.
