Tropical-Agriculture. 1988, 65: 4, 329-332; 9 ref. In 2 experiments day-old Shaver Starbro broiler chickens were given a fish meal broiler starter diet or a groundnut meal diet with or without 0.25% lysine or 0.20% methionine and 0.1-0.6% lysine for 5 weeks. It is concluded that diets in which fish meal is replaced can be used for broiler production if appropriately supplemented with methionine and lysine. It is recommended that fish meal in maize-based diets in which groundnut meal is the principal protein source could be replaced by 0.2% methionine and 0.1% lysine in 23% protein starter diets; 20% protein finisher diets should be supplemented with 0.1% methionine only.
