Fish solublesUseful reference: 352 Description:During the processing of fish to recover the oil fraction a mixture of water and oil is produced. Then after this mixture is centrifuged to remove the oil the water containing fraction can then be condensed or dried to produce condensed fish solubles or dried fish solubles. Fish solubles are high in Water Soluble Vitamins and have been used as a source of unidentified growth factors in poultry and swine feeding. They are not normally used in rations at high levels, because a large proportion of the nitrogen is present in the non-protein form and is not well utilized by monogastric animals. Source:Fish solubles are produced as a by-product of fish canning and fish oil production industries. Feeding Experiments:When fish solubles replaced soybean meal in diets for chicks growth rate was improved (2) (CAB N979064) (Bond, 1987). No difference in performance was observed when fish solubles replaced fish meal in the diet of young growing broilers (6) (AGRIS 94-110753) (Cornejo, 1993). Average daily gain and feed conversion was improved when fish solubles were fed to young growing pigs (3) (CAB N228875) (Chung, 1989). Gain was increased in red drum Sciaenops when fish meal was replaced with fish solubles (4) (CAB 981408472) (McGoogan, 1997). Rumen in vitro degradation of CP in dried fish solubles was found to be highly correlated with the drying temperature (5) (CAB 961406259) (Yoon, 1996). Formalin treated fish solubles when fed to dairy cattle was found to increase butterfat % (1) (CAB N023467) (Skurikhin, 1986). Nutrient Characteristics:
