Large genus of about 260 species, common in tropics and subtropics, mostly in arid and semi-arid areas. Indicators of overgrazing and poor pasture land. Herbage quality good in young plants but avoided by stock after flowering when they become hard and prickly. Eaten only if more palatable grasses not available.
