Ascorbic acidVitamin C. The vitamin is required in the diet of only a few vertebrates, including humans, other primates, guinea pigs, the red vented bulbul bird, the fruit eating bat and certain fishes. Most species synthesize the vitamin from glucose, via glucuronic acid and gulonic acid lactone. The enzyme gulonolactone oxidase is required for the synthesis and species requiring ascorbic acid are deficient in this enzyme. See reference on ADDITIONAL menu. References
