Annual, biennial or short-lieved perennial herb 60-80 cm high. Red-purple flowers and ovate-lanceolate leaves 4-8 cm long. Pods 8-10 cm long and 3 mm wide, slightly curved, glabrous with about 20 seeds.

Originates from S America and introduced into India, Australia, Africa and southern USA. It grows under moderately dry to humid conditions with annual rainfall 600-2000 mm and can tolerate some waterlogging. Much grown in Zimbabwe and Sudan and also in Mali in irrigated cotton rotations in which this legume is used for grazing and also cut for hay. It also improves the soil. Successfully grown in mixture with grasses in Australia. Forage contains up to 17 per cent CP and is high yielding, 75-90 days after sowing.

It usually dies out towards the end of the first season.
