Squid mealDescription:In some locations squid are available in such abundance that they can be harvested and used for meal and oil production. Squid meal is an excellent supplemental source of CP that equals or exceeds that of fish meal in feeding applications. Source:Squids are common to many areas (North Atlantic, Mediterranean, etc.) and are often available in excess of the human demand. The excess squid can be processed to produce squid meal and squid oil. Feeding Experiments:In a growth trial (1 to 48-days) with chicks squid meal based diet was found to out perform fish meal and meat and bone meal based diets (2)(CAB 791484300)(Hulan, 1979). Squid meal was found to be a good source of supplemental protein for prawns (1)(CAB 801402602)(Lim, 1978), (7)(AGRIS 83-886565)(Casib, 1982), (8)(AGRIS 97-025649)(Marzuqi, 1992). When shrimp were fed diets containing squid meal feed conversion and gain was increased (6)(CAB N504341)(Cruz-Suarez, 1992). In trials with gilthead seabream squid meal was found to be an excellent supplemental protein source (5)(CAB 971404864)(Fernandez-Palacios, 1996). Nutrient Characteristics:
