Revista-deSociedade-Brasileira-deZootecnia. 1985, 14: 4, 454-462; 12 ref. During pregnancy, 48 Landrace X Large White gilts were fed 1.8 kg daily of (1) opaque-2 maize with added vitamin B6, (2) as for group 1, but without vitamin B6, (3) opaque-2 maize plus soyabean meal and vitamin B6, (4) as for group 3, but without vitamin B6, (5) ordinary maize plus soyabean meal and vitamin B6, or (6) as for group 5, but without vitamin B6. In the 6 groups resp., daily gains of gilts during gestation averaged 49.9, 49.0, 57.5, 58.1, 64.3 and 61.3 kg (P<0.05). Litter size at birth, the number of stillbirths, litter weight and farrowing interval were not significantly affected by type of diet, but gilts in group 2 tended to have a slightly longer service period than other gilts. When females were fed the same diets during their 2nd pregnancy, litter size was significantly higher in groups 2, 3 and 6 (10.7, 10.2 and 9.4 resp.) than in groups 1, 4 and 5 (7.5, 7.4 and 6.8), and piglet birth weight was significantly higher in groups 4 and 5 (1.48 and 1.50 kg) than in groups 1, 2 and 3 (1.19, 1.25 and 1.25 kg resp.).
