Abstract 33Production and quality of king grass (Pennisetum purpureum X P. typhoides) and Erythrina poeppigiana forages grown in association.Benavides,-JE; Rodriguez,-RA; Borel,-R Paturages et alimentation des ruminants en zone tropicale humide. 1989, 367-376; 12 ref., presented at 1st symposium on ruminant nutrition in tropical conditions, Pointe-a-Pitre, Guadeloupe, 2-6 June 1987. Paris, France; INRA. In field trials in the humid region of Costa Rica, Pennisetum purpureum X P. americanum was grown alone or in mixture with Erythrina poeppigiana planted at 1667 or 3333 trees/ha and cut 3 or 4 times/year. Total DM yield averaged 30.9 t/ha and was higher at the higher planting rate and with 3 cuts/year. DM yield of P. purpureum X P. americanum was similar in the mixture (22.1 t/ha) and in the pure stand (22.9 t). CP content of the grass was increased from 4.7% in pure stand to 6.1% in the mixture and was highest at the high tree density and with 3 cuts/year. CP yield increased from 1.03 t in pure stands to 2.82 t in the mixture. This abstract relates to the following species:
