Abstract 347Comparative effects of cottonseed, soyabeans, safflower seeds and flax seeds on the performance of rabbits and guinea pigs.Johnston,-NP; Berrio,-LF 343 WIDB, Brigham Young Univ., Provo, UT 84602, USA. Journal-of-Applied-RabbitResearch. 1985, 8: 2, 64-67; 6 ref. The 5 diets were based on cottonseed 43, or safflower seed 34, or soyabean 20, or hempseed 39, or soyabean [oil]meal 15%, each with lucerne meal 50% and with more or less wheat. Content by analysis of energy, protein, fat, calcium, phosphorus, fibre, lysine, and methionine with cysteine, is shown for each diet. Each was given freely to 6 rabbits and to their young from birth; weaning was at 5 weeks old and the young were weighed at 3 and 8 weeks old. In a similar trial with guineapigs, the young were weighed at 3, 5 and 9 weeks old. Newborn guineapigs are able to eat and drink independently of their mother. In a feed preference trial, guineapigs preferred the 2 soya diets and ate less of cottonseed or safflower diets. Lactation and growth of rabbits were not significantly different between diets, though both were lower with cottonseed than on the other diets. Guineapigs given soyabeans or soyabean [oil]meal produced significantly more milk than on other diets. To 9 weeks old, those given cottonseed grew less and converted feed less efficiently than those given other diets. This abstract relates to the following species:
