For 8 months 3 groups of 6 Deccani sheep were given diets based on maize and rice with groundnut cake being replaced by castor bean oilmeal (Ricinus communis) at 0, 15 or 30%. Blood urea, bilirubin, total serum protein, aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase concentrations were not significantly affected. Histopathological changes were moderately severe in the kidney compared with the slight changes in the liver of sheep given castor bean oilmeal.
