Malawi, PO Box 219, Lilongwe, Malawi. Tropical-Animal-Production. 1984, 9: 3, 200-202; 5 ref. Four groups of 4 pigs of about 13 kg initially were fed to about 65 kg on practical diet based on maize meal 50, maize bran 24 and groundnut cake 20%, alone or with bean pod meal 5, 10 or 15% added at the expense of maize meal. They were given 0.8 kg daily increasing by 0.5 kg a week up to 2 kg, in 2 meals a day. With diets in the order named the mean daily gain was 0.57, 0.48, 0.50 and 0.44 kg, significantly less with any of the diets with bean meal than without it, but there was no significant difference between groups in feed intake, carcass weight, dressing percentage, or weight of head, offals or liver with heart, per cent of carcass weight. Proximate composition of each diet is given. This abstract relates to the following species:Phaseolus vulgaris
