Chickens were fed on diets containing different concentrations of free gossypol and iron sulphate for 17 days. In another trial chickens were given gossypol 0 or 980 mg/kg diet and Fe at 1000, 1500, 2000 or 3000 mg/kg. It is concluded that growing chickens can tolerate free gossypol at up to 590 mg/kg without any significant adverse effect on bodyweight gain, feed intake or feed conversion efficiency. FeSO4 was only partly effective in alleviating the adverse effects of high concentrations of free gossypol on performance.
