In extensive studies 110 weanling pigs in 2 groups were given diets containing 8-20% cottonseed meal of free gossypol content 0.069%. As the free gossypol content of the diet increased, reproductive performance decreased in sows and particularly in boars. Oestrus was delayed. Mortality also increased. Testosterone decreased greatly in blood of boars given diets with free gossypol 110-138 mug/g. Zinc in liver of boars given cottonseed cake had Zn 25.5 mug/g instead of the normal value 32.9 mug/g. The amount of cottonseed meal in the diet of sows did not affect the body weight of piglets at birth and at age 30 days. This abstract relates to the following species:Gossypium spp
