Studies on utilization of savanna herbage as the sole roughage ration for adult bullocks.

Mature, harvested herbage mainly comprising Heteropogon contortus (31.0%) and Bothriochloa pertusa (24.5%) was given in a metabolic trial to 6 male cattle of average body weight 191 kg. The feed had digestible crude protein 2.84%, biological value 63.3% and total digestible nutrients 57.6%. Mean daily DM intake was 87.9 g/kg0.75. Digestibility of DM was 57.3, crude protein 48.0, ether extract 44.1, crude fibre 64.0, nitrogen-free extract 62.5 and total carbohydrate 63.2%. Metabolizable energy was 2.28 Mcal/kg DM. Balances of nitrogen and phosphorus were positive but balance of calcium was negative.
