In a trial at Vicosa in 1978-9, maize was grown at 30 000 or 60 000 plants/ha alone or in association with soyabeans at 25 000 plants/ha in 4 different cropping systems. Plant population and cropping system influenced the nutritive value of the silage. CP content and DM digestibility were higher with the lower maize plant population. 2 rows of maize alternating with 4 rows of soyabeans gave the highest CP content.
