Elephant grass cv. Vruckwona and Mineiro cut after 60 days yielded 83.2 and 70.3 t fresh herbage/ha and 12.3 and 10.7 t DM/ha, resp. Of the treatments applied before ensiling, only wilting by exposure to the sun for 8 h raised DM content (to 21.04%). Soluble carbohydrates content was 11.47% for Vruckwona and 8.8% for Mineiro, of which 77.59% and 75.57%, resp., consisted of free sugars. Of the treatments tested, wilting gave the lowest values and Formol (40% formaldehyde) the highest values of soluble carbohydrates and free sugars.
