Growth rate over a 6-month period was significantly higher in animals fed Leucaena than in those fed Desmanthus (735 vs. 543 g/day, P less than 0.01) in addition to a limited amount of concentrates. The digestibility coefficients for dry matter, organic matter, crude protein and energy were higher for Leucaena than for Desmanthus. The sperm concentration was significantly higher in Jersey than in Holstein-Friesian bulls. There were no breed or nutritional treatment differences in ejaculate volume, motility, fructolysis index or semen content of magnesium, calcium and phosphorus.

This abstract relates to the following species:

Desmanthus virgatus, Leucaena leucocephala
