Two groups of 8 young cattle of mean initial bodyweight 66.8 and 62.4 kg were fed on fresh chopped forage of Leucaena leucocephala 3% of bodyweight daily with urea 2.5% in molasses given freely, about 1.5 litres of milk and 2 h of grazing on mixed Brachiaria mutica and Digitaria decumbens for 56 days. They gained 373 and 355 g daily. For another 71 days, one group received the same diet and the other had no supplementary grazing; groups in that order gained 452 and 531 g daily. For the final 35 days the 2nd group continued on the same diet and the 1st, instead of chopped leucaena, grazed leucaena from 0800 to 1000 h and from 1600 to 0500 h daily; gains were 535 and 430 g daily.
