Poultry Science, Madras Veterinary College, Madras-600 007, India. Cheiron. 1983, 12: 6, 290-293; 13 ref. In a study of the suitability of undecorticated safflower seed meal (USSM) as an ingredient of poultry diets, it was found that ground, unextracted USSM, rotary processed USSM and solvent extracted USSM had crude protein 18.5, 24.5 and 28.0% of DM respectively. Ether extract was 33.9, 16.7, 0.72, crude fibre 29.8, 21.3, 34.3, nitrogen-free extract 15.5, 34.2, 31.9, calcium 0.29, 0.30, 0.47, phosphorus 0.24, 0.34, 0.39, tannin 0.74, 0.63, 0.52% of DM and metabolizable energy 3804, 2506, 1470 kcal/kg. Compared with coconut meal [NAR 42, 4668], the unextracted USSM had higher concentrations of isoleucine and lysine and lower concentrations of arginine, leucine and valine. This abstract relates to the following species:Carthamus tinctorius, Carthamus tinctorius
