Landwirtschaftliche-Forschung. 1989, 42: 2-3, 135-149; 35 ref. During the last half of winter feeding, 2 groups of pair-fed German Black Pied X Holstein Friesian dairy cows were given concentrates 4 kg, yield-related concentrate on demand from an automatic feeder, and a basal maize-wilted grass silage with or without cottonseed kernels. Daily intake of cottonseed kernels was about 2 kg. With diets containing cottonseed kernels intake of silage decreased, but intake of yield-related concentrate was not affected. Cottonseed kernels increased daily milk yield and fat corrected milk by 2.2 and 1.5 kg, respectively. Compared with controls, average milk fat and milk protein content decreased significantly, but higher milk yield increased milk fat and milk protein yields with cottonseed.
