Carica papaya Papaya, pawpaw, papay, papawFast-growing tree with deeply lobed leaves that cluster at the top of the trunk. It is widespread in the tropics, and its large fruits are one of the world's most popular tropical fruits. Most parts of the tree contain pepsin, a proteolytic enzyme used as a meat tenderizer. In some areas the leaves are stripped and fed to livestock.
