Reference: 637

Indigenous to E and SE Africa where it occurs in relatively moist areas and situations. Introduced to Australia and Fiji. It produces good yields of herbage and shows good response to N fertilizer. Yielded 10.8 t DM/ha unfertilized and 33.7 t DM/ha with 450 kg N/ha. Exceptionally good LWG of steers is reported from Fiji.

Rapid dense growth hinders establishment of pasture/legume mixtures but has been successful with sod-seeding of Macroptilium atropurpureum and Centrosema pubescens, also with Trifolium repens andi Lotononis bainesii in Zimbabwe.
