Overview of Conservation Approaches and Technologies (WOCAT v.2.0)
World Overview of Conservation Approaches and Technologies (WOCAT v.2.0)WOCAT's mission is to provide tools that allow Soil and Water Conservation(SWC) specialists to share their valuable knowledge in soil and water management, that assist them in their search for appropriate SWC technologies and approaches, and that support them in making decisions in the field and at the planning level.
WOCAT was established as a global network of SWC specialists. It is organized as a consortium of national and international institutions and operates in a decentralized manner. A set of three comprehensive questionnaires and a database system have been developed to document all relevant aspects of SWC technologies and approaches, including area coverage.
The WOCAT CD-ROM Version 2.0 illustrates the WOCAT methodology and contains an introduction to WOCAT; databases of SWC technologies, approaches and maps; questionnaires; addresses; guidelines; a slide presentation; various reports; a glossary and a short video. It was prepared by a consortium of organizations including:
CDE - Centre for Development and Environment, University of Berne; DLD - Department of Land Development, Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Thailand; FAO; ISRIC- International Soil Reference and Information Centre, The Netherlands, OSS - Observatoire du Sahara et du Sahel, Tunisia, and RELMA - Regional Land Management Unit, Kenya

3. FAO LAND AND WATER DIGITAL MEDIA SERIES # 11 - Global Agro-ecological Zones (FAO/IIASA,2000)
The Agro-ecological Zones (AEZ) methodology enables rational land management options to be formulated on the basis of an inventory of land resources and evaluation of biophysical limitations and potentials. The recent enhanced availability of digital global databases of climatic parameters, topography, soil and terrain, land cover, and population distribution has now enabled revisions and improvements in AEZ calculation procedures. Also, these data have facilitated expansion of AEZ crop suitability and land productivity assessments to temperate and boreal environments, resulting in a global coverage for assessments of agricultural potentials.
The website and CD-ROM address several key resource questions: Will there be sufficient land for agricultural production to meet food and fiber demands of future populations? Where are shortages of agricultural land, and where there is room for agricultural expansion? What contribution can be expected from irrigation? Is land under forest ecosystems potentially good agricultural land? What are the main physical constraints to agricultural production? Will global warming affect agricultural potentials?
It is hoped that the massive amount of downloadable (in various GIS formats) climate, soil and terrrain maps, tables and analyzed information presented, will contribute significantly to a sound use of scarce land and water resources, and to enhanced food security for all.

management professionals around the world, elected a new chairperson at a
meeting in Stockholm, Sweden, on Friday. The appointment of former Canadian diplomat Margaret Catley-Carson is
effective immediately. Catley-Carson’s 30-year career in economic development
has included terms as president of the Canadian International Development
Agency, Deputy Executive Director of UNICEF and chair of the Geneva-based Water
Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council. She currently serves on the boards
of a number of national and international organizations, primarily in the field

2. MANUAL ON INTEGRATED SOIL MANAGEMENT AND CONSERVATION PRACTICES
Soil resources depletion is a widespread, direct threat to the sustainability of agricultural production. Dramatic changes in soil management concepts are needed to counter the threat. This manual proposes options for such changes, addressing a very broad variety of topics related to agricultural land management ranging from chemical and physical attributes of soils, soil management concepts, mechanization and tillage, mulching and green manure, erosion control and water resources management, to concepts of participative transfer of technologies. Traditional soil management concepts are analysed and suggestions made to consider more sustainable alternatives for a conservation effective agriculture. This manual is meant for both professors and students of universities, schools of agriculture and technical training centres, as well as for technicians involved in designing programmes, guidelines and policies related to the management and conservation of agricultural land.

3. REPRINT: FAO IRRIGATION AND DRAINAGE PAPER NO. 56:This publication presents an updated procedure for calculating reference and crop evapotranspiration from meteorological data and crop coefficients. The procedure, first presented in FAO Irrigation and Drainage Paper No. 24, Crop water requirements, in 1977, allows estimation of the amount of water used by a crop, taking into account the effect of the climate and the crop characteristics. The publication incorporates advances in research and more accurate procedures for determining crop water use as recommended by a panel of high-level experts organized by FAO in May 1990. The first part of the guidelines includes procedures for determining reference crop evapotranspiration according to the FAO Penman-Monteith method. These are followed by updated procedures for estimating the evapotranspiration of different crops for different growth stages and ecological conditions.

4. A NEW FORUM FOR CONSERVATION TILLAGE
Conventional agriculture practices that remove crop residues by burning, grazing or excessive tillage have consistently led to land degradation and desertification through runoff, soil erosion and nutrient leaching. Such negative effects on soil, water and plant nutrient resources have a negative impact on the sustainability of any rural development programme. One of the most effective remedies for land degradation is "conservation tillage" (CT) - a cultivation technique in which the fields are ploughed less or not at all.
The Internet is regarded as an important tool for the dissemination of knowledge on Conservation Tillage, especially in view of the increasing number of internet users in the target countries. Against this background, FAO and GTZ jointly prepared a website for the recently founded "African Conservation Tillage Network (ACT)". The website is hosted on the FAO server, incorporated in the existing AGLL website. The most important features are the News pages and Specialists and Literature databases. Other interesting features are E-mail conference facilities and information about coming events. Users can interactively add news items on conservation tillage to the webpages. Specialists in CT areas can provide their personal, professional and contact details which will be stored in the ACT database. The literature-database contains the most important bibliographic information, as well as, full abstracts and can be queried by various parameters. Each data entry will be cross-checked by the ACT-Secretary before being displayed on the webpages.

3. NEW DIMENSIONS IN WATER SECURITY
Water, an essential component of life supporting systems, is at the forefront of discussions on global sustainability and food security. Water also has a major role in poverty alleviation and local food security. The technology for a more effective use of the resource is known but institutional reforms needed to lead the world in a positive direction are proving difficult to establish. This study was commissioned to stimulate constructive discussion around many sensitive aspects of water policy. It is realized that many nations consider water a national prerogative and that the discussion on water touches on religious and ethical concepts. The study draws together a broad consensus engendered by concern for the future of our planet and the inescapable fact that future depends on water. This publication is downloadable at the following address:
