Consultative process
FAO and WHO have thus been involved in an ongoing consultative
process on means to improve the provision of scientific advice to Codex and
FAO/WHO Member Countries, and the effectiveness of FAO/WHO responses. This
process examines issues related to the independence, transparency, timeliness,
efficiency, integrity, sustainability and quality of scientific advice.
The steps in the consultative process were agreed upon by both Organizations,
who are committed to carrying out the review process in an open and transparent
manner. The objective is to provide a unified approach, based on commonly accepted
best practices, for the provision of scientific advice to Codex and Member
Countries.
A preparatory meeting (2001), an electronic forum (2003) and an expert workshop
(2004) have all been completed. In addition, FAO/WHO recently convened an expert
meeting to discuss ways of enhancing the participation of experts and inclusion
of data from developing countries in scientific advice activities (2005), and
published a Framework for the Provision of Scientific Advice on Food Safety
and Nutrition (2007).
