New guidelines on the safe use of powdered infant formula

As a follow up to the FAO/WHO risk assessment work on pathogens in powdered infant formula, WHO in collaboration with FAO have developed ‘Guidelines for the safe preparation, storage and handling of powdered infant formula’. This is currently available in English, French, Spanish, Chinese and Russian, and will shortly also be available in Arabic. Additional material has also been prepared, available in all six languages:

  • ‘How to prepare powdered infant formula in care settings’
  • ‘How to prepare formula for bottle-feeding at home’
  • ‘How to prepare formula for cup-feeding at home’
  • ‘Poster on preparing formula in care settings’

JECFA flavouring agents database upgraded
The JECFA database for flavourings (flavouring agent) specifications has been updated and modernised. All specifications for flavourings that have been evaluated by JECFA since its 44th meeting, including the 68th meeting, are available in the new format with easy to use search options in Arabic, Chinese, English, French and Spanish.

68th JECFA session (Food additives and contaminants)
Geneva, Switzerland, 19-28 June 2007
The 68th meeting of JECFA drew on the experience of 38 scientists from 16 countries, which was devoted to the evaluation of a number of food additives and contaminants. The summary and conclusions of the these considerations are now available.

Call for experts and call for data
Joint FAO/WHO/OIE expert meeting on critically important antimicrobials
Rome, Italy, 26-30 November 2007
The date of the above mentioned meeting has been changed from 17-21 September 2007 to 26-30 November 2007 in order to integrate the consideration of the specific needs of scientific advice from the Ad Hoc Codex Intergovernmental Task Force on Antimicrobial Resistance which will have its first session in October 2007.

The deadline for call for experts and call for data for the expert meeting to take place in Rome has been extended to 16 July 2007.

Call for experts and call for data
Joint FAO/WHO expert meeting on animal feed impact on food safety
Rome, Italy, 8-12 October 2007
The role of animal feed in the production of safe food is well recognized and Codex is currently considering the need to develop further risk management guidance on this issue. In order to facilitate and provide a scientific basis for such consideration FAO and WHO will implement an Expert Meeting to review the current knowledge on animal feed and its impact on food safety in October 2007.

FAO and WHO are seeking candidates to participate in this meeting and data to be reviewed by the meeting. The deadline for submission of CVs of experts and the presentation of data is 30 July 2007.

Call for experts and call for data
New FAO/WHO work on microbiological hazards associated with fresh produce
Problems linked with pathogens in fresh produce have been reported in numerous countries worldwide. As a result Codex has requested FAO and WHO to provide scientific advice to facilitate the development of specific risk management guidance on this issue. FAO and WHO are therefore seeking data and information to be considered in providing the required scientific advice to Codex on this issue as well as candidates to assist in the work to be undertaken. The deadline for submission of applications of experts and the presentation of data is 20 August 2007.
