database upgraded
The JECFA database for flavourings (flavouring agent) specifications has been updated and modernized. All specifications for flavourings that have been evaluated by JECFA since its 44th meeting, including the 68th meeting, are available in the new format with easy to use search options in Arabic, Chinese, English, French and Spanish.

The 68th meeting of JECFA drew on the experience of 38 scientists from 16 countries, which was devoted to the evaluation of a number of food additives and contaminants. The summary and conclusions of the these considerations are now available.

FAO/IICA Regional Workshop on Enhancing Food Safety in the Tourism Sector through the Application of Good Hygiene Practices (GHP) and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP)

FAO, in collaboration with IICA, is organizing a regional workshop on Enhancing Food Safety in the Tourism Sector through the application of Good Hygienic Practices (GHP) and Hazard and Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP). The workshop will be held in Barbados from 7 to 9 November 2007. The aim of the workshop is to enhance the knowledge of Caribbean countries and the ability of small and/or less developed businesses (SLDBs) to adopt the GHP/HACCP standard and to provide practical solutions for the implementation of the HACCP system in the SLDBs. It will also assist the governments in the development of national policies, strategy and action plans to improve food safety and trade in the local and tourism sectors. The FAO/WHO document Guidance to Governments on the Application of HACCP in Small and/or Less-Developed Food Businesses will be used for the training, as well as local case studies.

High Level Special Event on Food Quality and Safety, 34th FAO Conference

The Food Quality and Standards Service (AGNS) will organize a High Level Special Event on Food Quality and Safety to take place on Wednesday, 21 November during the 34th FAO Conference. The meeting will address the topic “Bridging the gap between food safety policies and practical implementation”. The objectives of the High Level Special Event are to reinforce political commitment and action for food quality and safety, by identifying solutions and possible ways for bridging the gap between food safety policies and actual implementation programmes for food safety and quality. This lack of communication/ coordination between policies and technical programmes has been identified as a major shortfall in improving the food quality and safety situation in developing countries. The event will consist of keynote addresses by invited dignitaries, technical presentations, country case studies by representatives from member countries and round table discussions.

FAO/WHO/OIE Stakeholders Meeting on Critically Important Antimicrobials
Rome, Italy, 26 November 2007
Following the request from the 53rd Session of the Executive Committee of the Codex Alimentarius Commission, a consultative process on non-human use of antimicrobials and antimicrobial resistance was jointly initiated by FAO, WHO and OIE in 2003. The Stakeholders meeting will take place from 09:00 to 12:00 hours on 26 November 2007 at FAO Headquarters immediately prior to the FAO/WHO/OIE Expert Meeting on Critically Important Antimicrobials taking place from 26 to 30 November 2007. The main objectives of the meeting are to present and discuss the stakeholders point of view on: possible impact on animal production and consumer protection of the WHO list of critically important antimicrobials for human use and the OIE list of veterinary critically important antimicrobials; provision of information on current risk management strategies and options for maintaining the efficacy of CIA for humans and animals and providing their views on priority combinations: human-pathogen-antimicrobial use and animal species in terms of benefit/risk assessment.

Subregional Training Workshop on “Food Safety Risk Analysis

FAO, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture of the Government of Malaysia, will organize a subregional training workshop on “Food Safety Risk Analysis: A Guide for National Food Safety Authorities”, to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 4-6 December, 2007. As part of its mandate to support countries in developing and implementing a national food safety risk analysis framework, FAO has developed a guide entitled “Food Safety Risk Analysis: a guide for national food safety authorities” (FAO Food and Nutrition Paper No. 87 (2006)) available online at: ftp://ftp.fao.org/docrep/fao/009/a0822e/a0822e00.pdf (Risk analysis pages on FAO/AGNS web site is at: http://www.fao.org/ag/agn/agns/foodcontrol_risk_en.asp). FAO is organizing the 3-day regional training workshop to train experts from countries in Asia on the principles and components of food safety risk analysis and on the use of the new guide, along with national case studies, to equip them with the skills necessary to apply the framework in their own countries and to develop a network of experts with specialised knowledge on risk analysis to facilitate the development and delivery of related capacity building activities and training at the country and regional level.
International Symposium Revolution in Food Safety Management
Bali, Indonesia, 13-15 February 2008
This symposium, which is being organized by IDF with the technical collaboration of FAO, will review new approaches for food safety management and consider the feasibility of their application in the dairy sector. With the development of these new risk-based approaches the tools are available to further improve food safety. However, for countries and their industries, particularly small and/or less developed businesses, they also represent a new challenge. This symposium will look at practical experiences and the challenges and feasibility issues to be addressed by those working to move forward in food safety management.
