Description

A diffuse annual with two ovate-lanceolate pointed leaflets, flowers distant in peduncled spikes, pod joints two to seven, roundish, convex or reticulated on the sides; flowers yellow, concealed in the stipular bracts (Grisebach, 1963). The chromosome number is 2n = 20.

Distribution

All tropical countries from New Mexico (United States) to Brazil, the West Indies, Australia.

Characteristics

It is a native legume in the brigalow areas of Queensland, Australia, but is not very productive. Downes (1966) tested it at Parada, north Queensland (lat. 17°66'S, 480 m elevation, rainfall 900 mm) and found it very poor in establishment vigour and vigour of growth in the wet season. It did not recover from frost or fire.
