Description

An erect, somewhat spreading tree, 15 to 30 m tall with rather smooth branches. Leaves bipinnate with 12 to 15 pairs of leaflets, 0.6 cm long and O.3 cm wide; phyllode simple, linear, slightly curved, 10 to 15 cm long and 1 to 1.5 cm wide, leathery. 

A-Habit, B-Pod, C-Seed, D-flower

Flowers yellow in a globose head, 1 cm diameter at the end of a 1.25-cm stalk. Pod straight, flat, 7.5 to 12.5 cm long and 1.25 cm broad, smooth, brown when ripe. Seed oblong, flat, 1 cm long, dark, shiny (Hosaka and Ripperton, 1944).

Distribution

Occurs at elevations of 230 to 850 m in Hawaii.

Characteristics

Reproduces mainly by suckers; heavy grazing and trampling tend to eliminate it. In six years it reaches 3 m in height with a diameter of 1 m at breast height.
