Characteristics

Fairly large tree; grows mainly on river and creek channels and in levee soils; bark dark grey, almost black, furrowed; wood dark but fairly soft; leaves grey-green, often slightly succulent, with a prominent midrib; flowers pale yellow, in balls; pods thick and fleshy, froth if shaken in water; seeds black with a prominent red aril. It is abundant in the 375- to 625-mm rainfall belt, but extends almost to the coast. Leaves are eaten to some extent, but are not widely used. They contain large amounts of tannin and have been suspected of poisoning hungry cattle. The pods are rich in saponin (Everist, 1969).
