Common names
Coolan, cooba, umung, black sally wattle, willow, black mattle.
Characteristics
Fairly large tree; grows mainly on river and creek channels
and in levee soils; bark dark grey, almost black, furrowed; wood dark but
fairly soft; leaves grey-green, often slightly succulent, with a prominent
midrib; flowers pale yellow, in balls; pods thick and fleshy, froth if
shaken in water; seeds black with a prominent red aril. It is abundant
in the 375- to 625-mm rainfall belt, but extends almost to the coast. Leaves

are rich in saponin (Everist, 1969).
